Winter break is almost here, and you’ve decided to go skiing? The only problem is that skis take up too much space in the car, leaving less room for passengers or your luggage.
"To avoid cramming passengers into the car and to travel in comfort, opt for a ski rack!"
But which one should you choose? What criteria should you use? What are the pros and cons of each type of ski rack? Don’t worry—Polaire has the answers. SELECTION
CRITERIA
As with any automotive equipment, you must first ensure it’s compatible with your vehicle.
For ski racks, you must first determine the type and number of items you want to transport (snowboards or skis). You must also consider whether or not your vehicle has roof rails.
THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF SKI RACKS
There are four types of ski racks:
The roof-rack ski carrier
This is the most commonly used option because it’s the most cost-effective solution if you already have roof racks. If you don’t have any, you can purchase roof racks Polaire.
Mounted on the roof rails, this ski rack is available in two versions: the slide-out ski rack, suitable for relatively high roofs, makes it easy to load and unload your gear; and the raised ski rack on blocks, which is better suited for curved skis or snowboards to prevent scratches.
With this solution, you can transport up to 6 pairs of skis and 4 snowboards. Some models also allow you to mount a roof box next to the ski rack!

The Magnetic Ski Rack
The magnetic ski rack can hold up to 5 pairs of skis or 2 snowboards, although most models are designed to carry only 2 pairs of skis.
This model is more affordable than other ski racks, but it requires a vehicle roof that is compatible with its shape and material. In fact, fiberglass, aluminum, or vinyl roofs make magnetic mounting impossible. Adhesion is also very poor or even impossible if the roof is domed, ribbed, or has a sunroof.
On the other hand, installing it is a breeze: just clean the mounting surface and place the ski rack directly on it!

The tow-hitch ski rack
This type of ski rack is perfect if you’re going skiing with a group. It can carry up to 8 pairs of skis, making it ideal for a large family.
It also has the advantage of being very stable—there’s no risk of it coming loose on the road!
However, like any equipment mounted on a tow hitch, it obstructs the vehicle’s rear visibility.
Finally, the folding models allow for easy access to the roof rack.
The 4×4 Ski Rack
Specially designed for SUVs, this ski rack mounts on the spare tire, which is attached to the trunk.
It holds up to 5 pairs of skis or 3 snowboards, which can be secured with a locking system (key). Be sure to add extra straps for optimal support of your gear.

One last option… a roof rack!
Although more expensive, a roof box is versatile and can carry up to 5 pairs of skis or 4 snowboards, protecting them from the elements and flying debris. It is also very secure thanks to its locking system.
