FUNCTION OF WHEEL COVERS
The main purpose of hubcaps is aesthetic; they serve as an ornament for your vehicle. They help conceal steel wheels, whose rather rough appearance can make the whole vehicle look dated. Of course, if you have aluminum wheels, hubcaps aren’t necessary.
So, while it’s true that the primary purpose of wheel covers is to enhance the appearance of the wheels, they also serve a protective function.
In fact, wheel covers protect the lug nuts from debris (such as pebbles) on the road.
CHOOSING WHEEL COVERS
When choosing wheel covers, there are several factors to consider.
First, your choice depends on aesthetic criteria that come down to your personal taste. There are several styles of wheel covers, with rounded or more angular spokes. Generally, wheel covers have 5 to 8 spokes.
Although they often have a metallic finish, black or two-tone versions are also available. In addition, the manufacturer may place a logo in the center or on one of the spokes of the wheel covers.
At the same time, it’s important to pay attention to the quality of the wheel covers. Choose wheel covers that are neither too flexible—since they could come loose—nor too rigid—since they could break. As for the material, plastic is less expensive but of lower quality.
On the other hand, plastic wheel covers made from granulated plastic offer a very good balance between quality and price. Aluminum ones are the most reliable but aren’t within everyone’s budget.
In addition, the double coat of paint on your wheel covers is essential to protect them from scratches, nicks, and various types of debris encountered on the road.
Finally, pay attention to the number of retaining clips that hold the hubcap to the rim. The more clips there are, the more securely the hubcap will be attached.

INSTALLING WHEEL COVERS
If you are replacing the wheel covers, remove the old ones by unclipping them.
Now check your tire’s dimensions, paying close attention to the rim’s inner diameter. This measurement is generally between 13 and 17 inches. Also make sure that the center of the rim does not protrude beyond the edge; this would prevent the hubcaps from fitting. Once you know the correct diameter, you can choose the size of your hubcaps.
Next, you need to attach the four metal clips that hold the hubcaps in place on the rims.
Make sure the valve is aligned with its specific notch (on the rim), then place the hubcap into the notches provided. Tap around the entire circumference to secure it to the rim.
Do a quick check to make sure the hubcap is securely installed and won’t fall off during your next trip.
