Guide to Choosing a Bike Rack

When heading out on vacation, it can sometimes be tricky to fit all your luggage in the trunk of the car, so when you also have to transport the whole family’s bikes, it becomes a real headache.

So you might want to consider a bike rack: here’s a comparison guide to help you choose the one that’s best for you!

THE TRAILER-MOUNTED BIKE RACK

A tow-hitch bike rack, as the name suggests, attaches to the tow ball at the rear of the vehicle. There is a platform version and a suspended version. You can hitch a trailer to your vehicle that will allow you to take 5 to 6 bikes with you!

This type of bike rack has many advantages. If you’re traveling with several cyclists, it’s a good solution since it can hold up to 4 bikes. Some models are even compatible with e-bikes. The included mounting systems hold the bikes securely in place.

As the photo shows, the trunk can be opened and closed on tilting models Polaire (this is known as the “tilting” system). Install a tow ball with a wiring harness beforehand. To prevent the bikes from rubbing against the car’s body, be sure to use foam or rubber protectors.

Plus, you don’t need to figure out a way to make your taillights or license plate visible. Most models already have them!

It’s easy to install: a frame clips (and unclips) directly onto the tow ball, while a strap holds the bikes securely in place.

On the other hand, there are a few downsides to note. First, rear visibility is limited, so be extra careful when driving.

However, given its features—such as the large number of bikes it can carry and its ease of use—a tow-hitch bike rack can be expensive.

THE TRUNK-MOUNTED BIKE RACK

Also known as a tailgate bike rack, the trunk bike rack is fairly easy to install since it only requires straps to secure the bikes and can be adapted to fit almost any vehicle.

Another advantage is its affordable price.

However, for long trips, you should check at each stop to make sure the straps are holding everything securely in place. Be sure to have taillights and a license plate, since the tailgate bike rack covers them. Just as with a tow-hitch bike rack, your rear visibility will be reduced.

Finally, your bikes may get damaged because they can bump into each other, and you won’t have access to your trunk during the trip.

THE ROOF-MOUNTED BIKE RACK

A roof-mounted bike rack takes up less space and is very convenient, but it’s less fuel-efficient due to wind resistance.
You’ll first need to install roof racks (see the related article), after which you can transport up to 4 bikes if your roof’s weight limit allows it.
If you’re really running out of space inside the vehicle, you could also consider using a roof box (provided you’re only transporting one bike).

Among its many advantages are its compatibility with a wide range of vehicles, the minimal storage space it requires, and the unobstructed rear visibility it provides.

Like other types of bike racks, it also has its drawbacks. It adds height to your vehicle, which can sometimes be a problem (especially if it’s already tall).

Also, as mentioned earlier, the wind resistance of bicycles leads to increased fuel consumption and, consequently, more pollution…

One last tip from Polaire: Buy a lock to keep your bikes from being stolen! Most Polaire bike racks come with a built-in anti-theft system.
