THE MOUNTAIN LAW: GEOGRAPHICAL ALLOCATION REMAINS UNCHANGED
Since its adoption in 1985, the “Winter Law” (as it is also known) has aimed to balance the protection, development, and urbanization of mountainous areas. With this in mind, it seemed essential to precisely delineate the affected areas and ensure safe passage through them.
The decree of October 16, 2020, requires prefects in metropolitan mountain regions and in the overseas departments, regions, and communities (DROM-COM) to mandate the use of winter tires or anti-skid devices, depending on the vehicle.

More than 48 departments and 5,500 municipalities are subject to these measures. Residents and tourists should therefore take the necessary precautions.
If the zone covers an entire department, the signage is accompanied by an M9z sign bearing the words “throughout the department”
